England's loss at the World Cup may not be the only tragedy this week as domestic violence is expected to rise as a result.
In 2006 when England were knocked out by Portugal domestic violence rose by 30% in West Yorkshire with many of the incidents happening in the evening hours. The Home Office data showed one in four offenders were under the influence of alcohol.
Jeff Woodward, Partner at Armitage Sykes Solicitors and member of the Law Society's Child Care Panel commented that "it's not only the partner that suffers during the event, often it's the children who witness domestic violence who also suffer as a result."
"Research has suggested that the victim suffers, on average, 40 incidents before they reach crisis point and are often frightened to leave. But once this move has been made there is much that can be done now to help."
West Yorkshire Police have been running the campaign "Don't let the World Cup leave its mark on you" with a number of other agencies. Police in Kirklees have responded by increasing the number of specially trained officers on duty throughout the tournament.
